Pura has scored a key win so far: a resolution by a Tacloban prosecutor saying that the performance, if taken as a whole, has “serious  literary, artistic, political or scientific value.”

Now, Pura has become a symbol of resistance against “these archaic laws.”

A Quezon province court granted their motion to quash, which in effect cleared them of the arson charge filed by the police. The four had been arrested by local police after they were suspected of burning down a modern jeepney in the town of Catanauan.

Their arrest brought about renewed criticisms of how police handle warrantless arrests and hot pursuits.

In this episode of Rappler Talk, justice and police reporter Jairo Bolledo sits down with Castro to talk about his detention and his perspectives on the country’s justice system after his warrantless arrest.

On Tuesday, February 27, Navotas City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 286 Judge Pedro Dabu only convicted one cop – Police Staff Sergeant Gerry Sabate Maliban – of homicide. He was sentenced to four to six years imprisonment. He was convicted of homicide, but the charge was originally a murder case.

Four other police officers received a slap on the wrist. Staff Sergeant Niko Pines Esquilon, Executive Master Sergeant Roberto Balais Jr., Corporal Edmard Jake Blanco, and Patrolman Benedict Mangada were all convicted of illegal discharge of firearms and were sentenced to four months imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the court absolved Staff Sergeant Antonio Bugayong Jr.

MANILA, Philippines – Why is the Catholic Church building more chapels in Filipino shopping malls?

Filipinos take these chapels for granted, a fact of life in the country with the world’s third biggest number of Catholics.

But what is the theology behind these mall chapels? How do they fit into the Catholic Church’s mission? Or how do they redefine “mission” for today’s Catholics who live in busy cities?

Rappler senior multimedia reporter Paterno Esmaquel II talks to Father Reginald “Regie” Malicdem, mission station priest of Mary Mother of Hope Chapel in Landmark, a popular department store in the Makati business district.

Malicdem, one of the most recognized priests on social media today, is a former rector of the Manila Cathedral. A longtime private secretary to Manila archbishops, he is now the vicar general or right-hand man of Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula.

This Rappler Talk interview interview with Malicdem was shot at Landmark Chapel right after the noontime Mass on Ash Wednesday, February 14.

Watch the interview at 11 am (Manila time) on Saturday, February 17.
